- Networks, Distance and Trust: Telecommunications Development and Changing Trading Practices in Ghana « World Development – Ragnhild Overå presents case studies on the impact of (mobile) telephone adoption among Ghanaian wholesale traders. She finds that time and money can be saved by substituting phone communication for traveling to obtain information and coordinate with partners. Improved access to information makes markets more efficient. Furthermore, mobile phones can be used to strengthen ties between traders and to customers. Although face-to-face communication is necessary to build initial trust, mobile telephony enables more frequent interaction which reinforces existing trust relationships, and facilitates remote monitoring.
