Digital Activism Decoded
“There are over one million books on Amazon.com, but if you search for “digital activism” the title at the top of the list is Digital Activism Decoded.” #I am happy to be one of the contributors to a book edited by Mary Joyce, Digital Activism Decoded. The book explores the intersection between digital technology and activism, in an attempt to map the field of digital activism in its entirety. Digital Activism Decoded is available as a free download from the Meta Activism Project’s website and in print from Amazon (de | us) and any other book seller. It is published under a Creative Commons license. #
My own contribution, entitled “The New Casualties: Prisons and Persecution”, deals with the downside of digital activism. It is based on research into the circumstances of bloggers’ arrests around the world. I have already published the data I worked with in November 2009. It is available for download as a simple Excel sheet. From my earlier post: #
Just some quick introduction to the structure of my list: It consists of the names of 162 bloggers that had been in prison at any time before August 1, 2009. That’s the cut-off date I chose for my book research. Please note that some of these people actually might not have been put in jail for their blogging, but other reasons. This is often unclear. All arrests and releases are sourced, so you can easily do additional research and verify the data. The status – whether someone is currently in jail – dates from August 1, 2009, so it might have changed since then. The rest should be self-explanatory. If not, there are plenty of ways to contact me. #I will be happy about your feedback! #
